Many people struggling with drug or alcohol addiction benefit from consistent support on the road to recovery. Making lasting changes and avoiding relapse in the future is possible through an intensive outpatient program (IOP). At Next Wind Recovery, our New Jersey IOP is designed to give clients flexibility as well as high-quality care.
What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
An intensive outpatient program is designed to address addiction in individuals who do not need supervision around-the-clock or who have already gone through detox. IOPs make it possible for clients to continue to take care of responsibilities at work or at home while in treatment.
In some cases, individuals will enroll in an IOP after graduating from a residential treatment program. The purpose of IOPs for these clients is to help them adjust back to their normal, day-to-day lives. After all, returning home and going back to school or work without support can be jarring after graduating from a residential treatment program.
An IOP serves as a structured therapeutic environment for patients. Patients meet anywhere from three to five times a week for up to four hours a day. Most IOPs last five to eight weeks. In an IOP, patients receive most services through group therapy. However, patients may also meet with an individual therapist every week throughout the duration of the IOP. Usually, the groups are small and do not consist of more than 10 people.
At Next Wind Recovery, we offer daily group meetings. These group meetings are run by our licensed staff. Clients are able to form strong relationships with others going through the same experiences. We also offer medication-assisted treatment that can ease withdrawal symptoms and curb cravings.
Are You a Candidate for an IOP?
If you’re not sure whether an IOP is right for you, consider the following:
- Do you have a safe and supportive home environment?
- Are your family members encouraging of your journey to recovery?
- Have you been through detox or a residential treatment program?
- Do you have responsibilities to take care of at work or at home?
IOPs are not considered ideal for clients who live with individuals who use drugs or alcohol regularly. This is because those who are working to overcome addiction should not have easy access to opioids and other addictive substances. Residential treatment programs are ideal for these clients so that they can live in a safe environment without these triggers.
An IOP is an ideal choice for individuals who do not require inpatient care, but require more support than just counseling once a week. This option is also ideal for those who have already completed inpatient care and require support to adjust back to normal life without relapsing.
What to Expect in Our Intensive Outpatient Program

Each week, clients meet with a therapist for one-on-one counseling. In addition, we offer group therapy sessions every day so that clients can attend treatment on a schedule that fits their needs.
